After a break from the activities of 2013/14 the Watkins Heart Challenge restarted in March 2015. This year the challenges started with the BHF Warwick half marathon on the 22nd March. There have been the usual muddy obstacle courses, more running, and a 'small', nearly 1000 mile bike ride to do. We would like to be trying to hit a new target of £10,000 by the end of the year.
But why am I doing this again?
In March 2013 I underwent five hours of open heart surgery after an infection destroyed my Aortic Valve and damaged my Mitral valve. I had lost nearly three stone in weight and many of you would probably not have recognised me. I spent four weeks in Heartlands hospital and Walsgrave hospital before coming home to recover for 10 weeks.
Twenty years ago Sarah lost her dad after a series of heart attacks at the age of 49. His father had also died from a heart attack at the same age. Fast forward ten years Sarah's step dad suffered a heart attack and her mom found herself in the early stages of heart failure. Despite lots of intervention and experimental surgery her mom lost her battle three years ago.
The care I received from Heartlands and Walsgrave was outstanding. That I am here is only thanks to the amazing team, but even the experts are constantly learning about the disease.
With this in mind, we decided that we can and should give something back. Hence the challenge.
Since October 2013 we have met our initial target of £5000 by running, swimming, crawling, climbing and cycling. We will be continuing to fund raise for as long as possible. Over 50 people have joined us so far for these challenges and all have added to the total.
