Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I've worked at the Royal Brompton Hospital for the past 16 years and seen first hand some of the amazing work the Trust undertakes.
I'm taking part in the third Prudential Ride London on July 31, to raise much needed funds for the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals Charity. The cycle ride, which starts in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, before heading into deepest Surrey through the Surrey Hills and finishing on The Mall in central London, is the same route that Olympic cyclists took at the London 2012 Games.
The Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital Charity support the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals by contributing to major building projects, buying vital equipment, funding pioneering research and improving the lives of patients with heart or lung disease.
The Charity are currently raising £50,000 to further develop the Royal Brompton and Harefield 3D printing programme.
In recent years, 3D printing has taken the world by storm, changing forever the way we think about creating a vast variety of different objects and leading to what some are describing as ‘The Third Industrial Revolution.’
Clinicians at our hospitals are using scans of real hearts to create a 3D image, which is then ‘printed’ to provide a personalised model, unique to each patient.
These prints are now being used to help cardiologists and surgeons decide on the best treatments for patients and to train new staff in surgical or catheter laboratory interventional techniques.
The impact for the health sector has already been immense, yet ‘bioprinting’, using living cells, could allow new tissue or even whole organs to be produced to repair diseased hearts or lungs in the future.
