We provide family-led care and support to children with life-limiting conditions

Story

On Wednesday 15th July 2015, our beloved baby boy, Timothy Lloyd Wray, suddenly became very ill and after a CT scan at Airedale hospital and confirmation from Leeds General Infirmary, it was found he had a large brain tumour.

What started out, as we thought, a simple tummy bug had escalated beyond our worst nightmares.

After transfer to Leeds General Infirmary in the early hours of Thursday 16th July, the surgeons tried desperately to save him but he tragically passed away.

We were told by the kind bereavement team at LGI that they had organised a place for our family at Martin House hospice in Boston Spa. We had not really heard of it, bar seeing the charity shops in local town high streets.

We soon found out that the aim of Martin House is to provide family led care for children with life shortening conditions. It is a place where children, young people and their families can come to stay from time to time along their journey and find support, rest and practical help.

We had experienced and are still experiencing a terrible shock. It is every parent's greatest fear to deal with the loss of their child. Being able to start the grieving process whilst at Martin House has given us so much strength. We have been able to spend time with Timothy and our families have been able to visit and say their goodbyes.

The support from the team at Martin House has been remarkable. We cannot fully express how wonderful the people are, always on hand to talk, keeping us well fed, being able to delegate difficult phone calls to experienced carers, ready to guide us when dealing with difficult issues and helping us prepare for times ahead.

As soon as we had arrived at Martin House, I think that my wife and I instinctively knew that in the weeks and months ahead we would do whatever we could to support and raise awareness for Martin House - to give something back for the fantastic and incredible charity they are.
