In memory of Colin Godden
Pilgrims Hospices is a charity providing palliative care, free of charge, to people in east Kent. For people with a range of life-limiting illnesses, specialist services are provided from our three hospices in Canterbury, Ashford and Thanet, in patients' homes and via community programmes.

At the end of 2019 Dad was diagnosed with Lung Cancer and whilst we lived in hope, we were soon given the devastating news that it was terminal.

We were shortly referred to the Pilgrims Hospice to talk through options as to what Dad wanted.

Unfortunately we ended up back there far sooner than any of us ever imagined, but the care and compassion that was shown to Dad and us was amazing.

We were able to visit at anytime, for as long as we wanted, as many of us at a time. For me personally taking the children was daunting, but again the staff were great with them too. They were able to see Grandad and go off for a little play in the lounge with the toys, which they thought was great. It didn't scare them, infact they have good memories of visiting Grandad at the Hospice and it allowed them to say goodbye. Again for me that means everything.

It seems strange to say I have fond memories of being at the Hospice, but I do. In the absolute worst of times it enabled us to be with Dad, with family and friends. I think unless you've been to the Hospice it's difficult to understand what it's like. Nothing was too much no matter the time of day or night. The staff there were amazing and Dad was treated with complete respect and dignity. They were also very supportive of us.

So I'm putting myself way out of my comfort zone and on the 20th February 2021, the year anniversary of Dad passing away, I will be walking from Mum and Dad's home to LTR Supplies (our family business that Dad started over 20 years ago) in Teynham and back in memory of my Dad. It may sound easy to some, but I feel it will be almost as much of an emotional challenge, as it will be a physical one.

All of this is to help raise as much money  as possible for this amazing charity, to help ensure that it's there for any other families that find themselves in the unfortunate position to need it.
