Story

Hi there, thanks for visiting my fundraising page!

By coming here you will probably know that I am hoping to complete the much coveted ‘CCC’ ultra marathon on 30 August as part of the UTMB trail series. I will be raising money for the truly amazing work done by The Elizabeth Foundation, a deaf preschool attended by my son, Theo, for the last two years.

Below is a bit more information about the challenge itself, as well as a short film from Theo to tell his story about how The Elizabeth Foundation have helped give him the best start to his hearing journey.

Thank you very much for any support that you are able to give.

The ‘CCC’ [Courmayeur - Champex - Chamonix]…

This run will be a massive challenge for me, and it’s the culmination of 2 years of countless hours of trail-running training (and around 300 miles of ultra marathons) to get me ready - (thanks for being so understanding Harriet!).

It is 101km long and will take me through the mountainous Mont Blanc region. Along with having to contend with the difficulty of running at altitude, I will also experience an elevation gain of 6,100m (4.5 times up and down Ben Nevis!).

All going well, I will pass through Italy, Switzerland and into France within the cut off limit of 26.5 hours.

I am taking on this challenge to raise both money and awareness for the life-changing work done by The Elizabeth Foundation. They have helped make a huge difference to Theo’s life in his early years with a profound hearing loss.

Our son, Theo…

Theo was born 12 weeks premature as an identical twin. Sadly, his brother, Archie, was too weak to survive longer than 4 days. Theo fought for nine weeks in hospital and became strong enough to eventually make it home to begin family life.

As a result of his prematurity, he is profoundly deaf. Thanks to incredible ‘cochlear implant’ technology, and the amazing work by the team at Southampton Auditory Implant Service, Theo has been given the gift of sound. So, after a significant operation at 2, he was able to start his hearing journey with the support of The Elizabeth Foundation. Theo has attended this deaf pre-school, based in Portsmouth, for two days every week over the last two years.

The Elizabeth Foundation.

The work done by The Elizabeth Foundation is truly life-changing.

Through the dedicated support of their volunteers and paid professionals, they are able to provide deaf children with the best start in life to help them learn to listen and talk. The preschool offers structured environment to provide rich language development opportunities and regular access to speech and language therapy.

They are almost entirely funded through donations, so without support from sponsorship like this, they would not be able to continue to do their work.

They are the only organisation like this in the UK, and the fact that many families make weekly journeys from London to Portsmouth and even further afield is testament to the amazing benefit they provide.

We have been so lucky that Theo has been able to benefit from The Elizabeth Foundation, and with generous support from our family and friends, we want to help ensure more children and their families can be given the start that Theo has had.

Thank you!
