Story

The Tommy Godwin Challenge cycling event started in 2013 to raise essential funds for Marie Curie West Midlands.

Tommy was a local cycling hero who won two bronze medals in the 1948 Olympics, as well as many awards at National and Commonwealth levels. He went on to be the Team Manager for the GB cycling team at the 1964 Olympics in Japan. As well as running his bike shop in Kings Heath he contributed greatly to sporting legacy in the West Midlands.

He passed away in 2012, spending his last few weeks at the Marie Curie Hospice.

The event has continued to grow and thus far has a raised in excess of £90,000 for the Hospice.

It costs over £11,300 per day to keep the Hospice running, so every penny we raise DOES make a difference.

We really want to hit our target of reaching that magic grand total figure of £100,000 by the end of September, which would mark the anniversary of Tommy’s 100th birthday later this year in style.

Sadly, corona virus has stopped us in our tracks as far as the actual formal cycling event is concerned. But the financial needs of Marie Curie still need to be met. Like many other charities they are suffering heavily this year. Throughout the crisis they have been able to stay open and adapt using new technology to ensure they can still deliver expert care and keep loved ones connected. But this all comes at an increased cost, so they can ill afford to lose our fundraising.
Hence we are looking to raise funds via this "100-for-100" appeal.
