Story

Tommy, also known as Stephen Rhodes......or more importantly as Dad and Grandpa.......was many things to many people.  To his family he was a kind, caring, attentive, funny, energetic and inspirational husband, father, grandpa, uncle, brother and son.  He was never happier than when he was with his wife, kids and grandsons. To the wider community he was a fierce campaigner, empathetic consumer champion and wildly brave undercover journalist.....fighting for people who were unable to fight for themselves.

Tommy was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in October 2014.  Even at a time when he was facing his greatest battle he stepped forward to be the voice for others......taking part in numerous initiatives and speaking events, bringing the patient's perspective to help improve MND care, to ensure that services were available for MND patients and to raise awareness and much needed funds for MND research.  Something that will in particular leave a lasting legacy is when Tommy took part in the Silence Speaks campaign with his grandson, inspiring and teaching 5 year old Ethan the need to support those in need.

During Tommy's last months, Rennie Grove Hospice Care supported Tommy's wish to be at home with his wife Greggy, dog Toast, cat Jeremy and kids Nick, Beck, Sam and Jack as well as grandsons Ethan and baby Theo.  Their care and attention at this tough time allowed Tommy to get the most out of his life and for him and the family to feel safe and cared for.  The fantastic team of nurses were always at the end of the phone to support and no question was ever too small or any request too big.  On his last week the nurses visited Tommy daily allowing him to enjoy family meals, smiles and hand holding with baby Theo and gave him and the family much needed time and space to say what they needed to all in a place which gave him most comfort....his home.

On his last day Tommy asked for the Rennie Grove nurses to come to be with him and the family. Kate and Margaret's care during his last few hours allowed the family to be with Tommy to the end and supported the family during this time of loss.

In life it was Tommy's passion to help others, in death we want to continue this on his behalf.  By supporting our fundraising you can help to ensure that other families benefit from this most vital resource.

Finally we would like to thank the whole Rennie Grove team.  Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for what you did for Tommy and for us.  You have been amazing and we could not have come through this without you.
