Story

Hello everyone

My beautiful Husband and I have been together for 14 years, we got married last year very shortly after receiving the shocking news that he has Stage 4 Cancer; we had only been living together for a couple of months after our long, long distance courtship. Without doubt he is THE most amazing human being on this good green Earth and we are making the most of every day we have together, every small pleasure and accomplishment means a great deal to us.

Cancer treatment can be pretty yucky! We have met so many fellow patients on the Douglas Macmillan Oncology unit at Yeovil Hospital in Somerset, that have patience, stoicism and general ballsiness to keep smiling through the long hours (which can be all day) of treatment.

Our aim with this event is raise the funds to provide tablet computers for entertainment (which is not on the stretched NHS radar as far as funding is concerned – quite rightly) so that the four walls don’t get so boring, and a number of other smaller items to make the whole thing better all-round such as PIC line covers, hand massage and anything else the amazing nurses can think of.

These seem like small gestures don’t they – believe me, any small gesture of comfort is huge to those going through treatment.

When I first proposed shaving my head it was a simple show of solidarity with those who lose theirs through Chemotherapy, and to raise a bit of cash to do something nice on the unit by way of thanks for the extraordinary care we have received. Now, however, it has grown in to a quite large family affair. My Mum, who had Breast Cancer 12 years ago, is going for it too. Even better, my two sons Dan and Joey are going to join us, and Dan’s hair which is over 2 feet long, is going to be donated to make wigs for children with cancer. My delicious husband is going to join in for good measure too!!

We have all lost special people we love, my Grandad Jason, Grandmother Doreen, stepdad Tim all died from later stage Cancer that was diagnosed too late to be effectively treated. This is a sad legacy. We want to make a great legacy going forwards and make a positive difference.

Our initial target is £5,000 which will provide 4 tablet computers and a number of other small comforts including the PIC line covers & hand massage, and anything else that is suggested to us by those of you also receiving treatment at present.  The more we raise together, the greater material difference we can all make to the lives of the ones we love going through Cancer treatment right now.
