Story
On Saturday 30th June 2018, I will be jumping out of a plane at 13,500ft to raise money for the road safety charity, Brake. I will be fundraising in memory of my brother Sean, who was killed in January 2016.
Road safety affects everyone. It affects whether children can go to the park or walk to school, elderly people can get to the shops and whether families feel safe to get around their neighbourhoods.
For some people, it changes everything. Road crashes and casualties end lives too soon, rip families apart, leave communities reeling in shock and victims feeling alone and without hope.
Support for road-crash victims is a grossly under-funded area. When someone dies in a crash, their mum, dad, wife, husband, partner, brother, sister, daughter or son are often left to struggle through their loss alone. Brake wishes for the government to invest in specialist support, offering prompt and comprehensive help to families when the worst has happened.
Drivers who kill or maim all too often receive lenient sentences. Families are betrayed time and again by our justice system. Brake is calling for tougher charges and penalties that reflect the suffering caused; investment in road-traffic policing; and for government-funded support for road crash victims whose loved ones have been violently killed or have suffered life-changing injuries.
Brake is a road safety charity working with communities and organisations across the UK to stop the tragedy of road deaths and injuries, make streets and communities safer for everyone, and support people bereaved and seriously injured on roads.
