Walk the Wight 2011 · 15 May 2011 ·
The Wycombe Wanderers are walking a Marathon across the Isle of Wight on May 15th 2011. We are a team of family and friends, with a mix of abilities who have joined together in memory of an 11 year old boy called Jake:
Lorraine Hall, Jake's Mum - a seasoned rambler - even has the walking sticks to prove it
Tracy Davies, Jake's Auntie - a runner at heart - walking just takes too long
Elaine Sebastian - geat all rounder with a dodgy ankle
Tracey Green - regular dog walking only
Donna Robb - another dog walker but no hills allowed
Also walking are a very special group of friends from Lorraine's work - Maggie Brooks, Nicki Rutland, Denise Hughes, Den Beard and Jas Kang.
We have been training since January and between us we must have covered 1000 miles and more, so whoever or whatever has bought you to this page, press the donate now button before you leave!.
Here's why we are walking:
In Jan 2004, Jake was doing just fine. He was about to go to Peru with his family on a trip of a lifetime. He had passed his 11 plus and was to start at the Royal Grammar School in September. Then bang, all our worlds came crashing down, Jake was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer which affects around 100 children per year. The survival rate is just 23%. Jake never survived the treatment, it is without doubt an evil disease and he died on August 16th 2004.
At 11, nearly 12, Jake was at the early stages of adulthood, he was a real chatter box, very intelligent. He read loads, listened to way out music and could build lego blindfolded. He would have been celebrating his 18th Birthday last year on Sept 2nd so we thought we needed to do something extra challenging and raise as much as we can in the process.
Whether you knew Jake or not, please make a donation and help fund research into this evil cancer which continues to affect children every day.
