Story

My Dad suffered from this nasty, devastating disease 25 years ago.

Alzheimer’s Society provides support and advice to families of those suffering from dementia.  Alzheimer's Society also funds research into causes of dementia and successfully lobbies Government to fund such research.

Julie Williams, Director of the Dementia Research Institute (which is supported by Alzheimer's Society), a lifetime researcher into the disease mechanisms, has played a key role investigating causes and recently described her work on BBC Radio 4's "The Life Scientific".

Research over recent years has identified genes such as APOE4 that are involved in the development of Alzheimer's disease.  Research has also identified the toxic protein amyloid as a part of the disease process; this has resulted in immunotherapy treatments that enable the bodies' immune system to clear that toxic protein.  In clinical trials, this has lead to significant improvement in cognitive function and quality of life; Alzheimer's Society supports early application of such promising treatments to those suffering from the disease.
