SCT Abseil at the ArcelorMittal Orbit · 9 September 2018 ·

Since 1965 we've helped people find a life beyond homelessness & addiction. Embedded in East London, we provide places to stay, address the complex causes of addiction, run classes to help develop skills, confidence & build vital social connections and help people establish a lasting recovery.

Story

Apparently if all  goes well, it will look something
like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJAbcV0DfMI

I just learned what abseiling was last week. A good
backgrounder here if you are in a similar boat, or orbit, to me: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abseiling

I knew a little bit about the orbit beforehand. Some
fascinating  facts can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abseiling

  1. The structure was re-purposed with the world's
    longest
slide in 2016, as a way to attract more visitors
  2. 60% of the steel used for the sculpture was
made of recycled steel in the
    Esch
    Belval
steel plant in Luxembourg (I wonder if Lakshmi got them a discount?). I have no
idea where the other 40% came from. I heard  Jiangsu Shagang Steel
    offered
51%, but calling the JS Obit didn’t have the same charm as the all to catchy
“ArcelorMittal (Luxembourg) NV Orbit”. A 50/50 JV was one idea, but double
barrelled names, are well, ya know (being aware that 25% of you on this
list  have DB names. Im only kidding, of course).
  3. Art critic Brian Sewell said (of  the Orbit) "Our country is litteredwith public art of absolutely no merit. We are entering a new period of fascist gigantism. These are monuments to egos and you couldn't find a more monumentalego than Boris.”
  4. It has the nickname the “ 'Eyeful Tower”
  5. Despite this criticism, it has been included in
the new 2015 design of the British passport.
