We are three consultant plastic surgeons who treat melanoma at the University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust. We have formed a team to raise awareness about malignant melanoma and raise funds for our nominated charity, Melanoma Focus.

In April 2019 we are embarking on a couple of events, a marathon and then a triathlon featuring a half Ironman, which includes a half marathon.

Given the history of the marathon it was fitting that we had a greek theme for our team that incorporated our medical background, hence UHNM Plastikos was born.

We will be competing in the first ever half Ironman event in Greece on Sunday April 14th. This involves a 1.2 sea swim, a 56 mile cycle and a 13.1 mile run. This is also known as an Ironman 70.3. We are entering this as a relay team. The previous week, one of us will be running in the Greater Manchester Marathon on Sunday April 7th!

The team consist of Wayne Jaffe, Clinical Lead in Skin Cancer at the Royal Stoke University Hospital, and a two times Ironman. Wayne will be running the Manchester Marathon for Melanoma Focus on Sunday April 7th. He will then join his colleagues at Costa Navaro and where he will complete the 56 mile cycle leg in the Greek Ironman 70.3 triathlon.

Wareth Mamoun, whose interests are skin cancer and lower limb reconstruction will lead the team out at the Ironman by completing the first leg, the 1.2 mile open water swim. Wareth has not swum in open water before so this will be a new experience for him!

Finally the team will be brought home by Kostas Apostolou, whose interests are skin cancer and head and neck cancer. Kostas has embarked on training for his race by regularly running at his local parkrun on Saturdays. Kostas will be returning back home to Greece to run his first ever half marathon which is 13.1miles and complete the Ironman challenge hopefully within the required cut off time!
