First: thank you all for coming to look at our page.
Why should you care about us?
Four of us - Ricky Sayeed, George Woodhams, Jack Palmieri and Dom MacIver - are going to Tyre, in South Lebanon to teach English in UNRWA (the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the
Near East) schools for Palestinian refugees. We're going with UNIPAL (A
Universities’ Trust for Educational Exchange with Palestinians). If you want to know more, visit www.unipal.org.uk
The Palestinians in the Rashadiyeh and Bourj al-Shemali camps face a constant struggle: they aren't allowed to escape the refugee camp and get decent jobs, proper education, decent housing or political representation. The town's economy was savaged during the civil war, particularly during Israeli and Syrian occupation. Now their best hope to escaping deprivation and despair on a personal level is often to get out of the country, find a good job and send money home. To do this successfully, they need good English, which is what we hope to give them.
Just as in previous projects, any money we raise will go straight to the kids in the schools, funding a small project buying materials for the school, building new classrooms, or doing whatever they want us to do with it.
It won't be going to funding our trip - we all paid our own expenses, subsidised by UNIPAL
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
