SToRMS: Implementing Strategies To Reduce Male Suicide.

Story

We are fundraising for SToRMS, the charity we have been working with for the past year.

SToRMS was set up in memory of Dan McAllister who unexpectedly took his own life in May 2015 aged nineteen. Suicide is recognised as the biggest killer of men and women under 35 in the UK, but the silence around it means that this statistic goes largely unrecognised. SToRMS' mission is to reduce young male suicides by facilitating widespread open discussions about suicide, promoting mental well-being and emotional resilience from an early age, challenging gender stereotypes and highlighting the relationship between alcohol and mental wellbeing.

As a tennis club, we have given our challenge a tennis twist. Amidst the disruption of COVID-19, many popular sporting events have been cancelled or postponed, including one of the biggest events in the tennis calendar, the French Open (Roland Garros), which was due to start on Sunday 24th May. The average tennis player is thought to run 3 miles per tennis match, and we know there are 254 singles matches (men's + women's) played at Roland Garros. Therefore, in the two weeks the Slam was due to occur, we are challenging ourselves to cover the total distance ran by singles players, which is 1524 miles!

You can keep up to date with our progress via our Strava Club account and we will be posting updates as often as we can on here and on our Instagram (uos_tennis) & Facebook accounts.

We can't wait to get started and raise money for a local cause close to our hearts, so please donate if you can! Thanks in advance and keep safe.
