Story
I applied to be a Director of Hong Kong's 24 Hour Race 2013 in June, and since then have worked with a team of 6 Directors to bring this year's race to fruition.
Running to Stop the Traffik is a student-led endurace event. It started in 2010, and continues to expand each year. This year, an unprecedented 470 students from 20 schools in Hong Kong will participate. Students will run for 24 hours in a relay-style race (each team comprises of 7-9 students) around Lugard Road on the Peak. I ran in the race myself in 2011 and 2012, and I can say that it is a challenging but rewarding experience. We run to raise funds for Freedom Matters, a UK-based registered charity that is freeing trafficked Nepalese children and young people from slavery, abuse and exploitation. Beyond rescue Freedom Matters also provides rehabilitation, education, and vocational training for trafficking survivors who have no family to return to.
Freedom Matters urgently needs funds to tackle a new and hitherto largely unreported issue: the internal trafficking of Nepalese children into “orphanages” in Kathmandu valley. This is a massive challenge given the scale of the problem with an estimated 11,000 children in institutional care in Nepal and the need to support children and families after rescue. The organization is currently working on prosecuting the owners of a children's home outside of Kathmandu called 'Happy Home' that houses over 100 trafficked children, who are physically and sexually abused.
We have an ambitious fundraising goal of HKD$1.5million this year. We rely on corporate sponsorships to fund the running cost of the race, including catering, logistical costs, etc., so 100% of the money you donate will go to Freedom Matters. Please consider supporting me! Thanks for your generosity - I really appreciate it.
