Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I will be running a half Marathon in Glasgow wearing a splint and
raising funds for the Shiresmill Riding Therapy Centre.

My son Luca was born 30 weeks with Brain Haemorrhage, Sepsis
and Meningitis. At the age of two he was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, the most common disability in childhood. 40% of children with cerebral palsy were born prematurely. Around 2000 babies are diagnosed with this condition every year in UK, a life condition which affects movement, muscle tone, balance, and posture. There is no cure, but different therapies and equipment can support the children. Luca wears a pair of splints to help
with the balance and preventing his legs bending inwards further. Pleased to announce that Luca will receive Hippotherapy at the Shiresmill Riding Therapy Centre, a member of the Riding for the Disabled (RDA). This small charity based in Fife, provides an invaluable support to children with different conditions
such as autism, learning difficulties and physical disabilities including Cerebral Palsy. This approach started in Germany and now they provide this technique UK wide. Hippotherapy is a therapy with horses, which improves self-esteem, confidence, balance, posture, gait, attention, visual coordination, sensory input, tactile response, and most importantly ability to express thoughts and needs. Shiresmill is a very small charity and relies on donations to keep their services going.

I am running the AJ Bell Great Scottish Run on 1st October, wearing a splint, very similar to my son’s to raise awareness of his condition, and also to raise funds for the Shiresmill Riding Therapy Centre. Thank you for your donation!
