Story
Thank you for visiting WRc’s Raft Race WaterAid Team’s fundraising page.
WaterAid enables the world’s poorest people to gain access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education. Safe water is something most of us take for granted. Yet over a billion people do not have It and a half a billion people lack basic sanitation. As a result, a child dies every fifteen seconds from water related diseases.
As part of the Thames Water WaterAid campaign, a team from WRc - Peter Henley, Nick Erander, Sarah Edmunds, Benjamin Briere, Killian Spain, and Liz Gimmler took part in a one mile raft race on 11 July. 40 ‘Star’ themed rafts battled it out on the river Thames at Caversham Bridge in this annual legendary event.
Each team designed and built their raft and wore fancy dress based around the theme of Star Rafts. We were the WRc Rock Stars (with froggy trimmings!) on-board our aptly named raft ‘Wet, Wet, Wet!’.
We enthusiastically took part but about half a mile in, we gradually came apart until we were all immersed in the river Thames! Please dig deep and sponsor our endeavours online, it’s secure and easy.
See below for more details about the WaterAid cause and the Thames Water WaterAid campaign.
Between 2011 and 2015, the Thames Water WaterAid campaign is looking to raise £2 million for WaterAid and the target is to raise £500,000 a year.
In the first two years, the campaign has:
· Installed 724 new water facilities, providing 13,288 people with access to safe water
· Installed or renovated 952 toilet facilities providing a further 15,023 with access to sanitation
· Provided toilets at 49 schools
· Raised a staggering £1.13 million of the £2 million four-year target.
It is as important as ever that we continue to raise money so we can continue to reach those most in need. This is what your money can pay for:
£3 = a bag of cement for a latrine slab
£10 = three day training for one hygiene education volunteer
£75 = a locally manufactured rainwater harvesting system for a family
£300 = a hand pump.
£800 = a school toilet block for 200 children.
Please help us to support WaterAid’s work.
