Story

Dust off your Christmas glad rags and raise funds to support some of the most vulnerable older people in our borough this Christmas.

Let's face it, 2020 hasn't give us many opportunities to dress up, which is why on 17 December we're inviting you to showcase your pretty frock, dig out your embarrassing Christmas jumper, or don those Santa socks you've been hiding at the back or your draw since you received them in your stocking last year. By doing this you could help us to raise vital funds for Age Concern Merstham, Redhill and Reigate (ACMRR).

*PLEASE ADD YOUR FULL NAME TO YOUR DONATION SO WE CAN CLAIM WTW MATCHING.*

Donations are in support of ACMRR, a small local charity which is committed to making sure that no one in later life feels alone. The charity promotes the well-being of older people in our borough, making later life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience.

The Charity's services include:

  • A day centre in Merstham providing lunches, activities, advice, various support services and (crucially) friendship for many local residents
  • A befriending service, matching volunteers with members and providing weekly contact to those on their own. This has proved even more vital during COVID-19 and helped elderly members feel more connected and less isolated
  • Gift parcels containing puzzles and books to keep members entertained
  • Fresh flowers and groceries for those unable to get out

The Charity needs your help in order to continue running these services in 2021 and beyond. All donations are incredibly appreciated.

About the charity

Age Concern MRR provides a day centre for older people three days per week, referred to as ‘The Club’ by the clients and is a vital resource for them. There is a traditional hot meal available every day and a takeaway option for the days we are closed. They can access a podiatrist and hairdresser; we can support our clients with their business needs and can advocate on their behalf. We have an accessible minibus to transport them to and from the centre and provide weekly shopping trips and outings. There is a Men’s Shed in the garden of the centre for older men who prefer not to attend a traditional day centre and a Befriending Service for socially isolated older people. Apart from the wide range of activities available, the clients mainly come to stay connected with their friends and community. We support older people living in our local area, helping them to remain living in their own homes for as long as is practical and they so wish. Our client’s range in age and abilities, our youngest is 68 and the oldest is 103. We offer a range of services with the primary aim of reducing loneliness and social isolation and keeping people connected with their friends and community. Many of our clients have mobility problems and rely on walking aids or wheelchairs to get around, which limits their ability to be independent at home and in the community, many would be forced into premature admission to a care home without the support we can offer.
