Story

This year, 2021, I shall celebrate 5 years of being in remission!
In 2015, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer, apparently, I had an 11cm tumour on my womb.
I was whisked off to Charing Cross hospital and put under the care of Dr Sarwar, Mark Openshaw and Professor Michael Seckl
They gave me some pretty big doses of chemo, when one batch didn’t work, the doses got stronger
The disease had spread to my lungs, liver and brain – it was a relentless disease taking over wherever it could.
My feet & finger nerves were burnt out by the sheer level and strength of the chemo, my hair had long fallen out.
But my inner positive spirit lived on – I took everything they gave me, what I did know is that ‘they’, my consultants, were the world’s leading experts and I had my whole trust in them- how blessed was I?
BUT by November 2015, the chemo was going to kill me; so the chemo stopped.
And then… I was lucky enough to be put on a trial drug, what was the worst that could happen to me?
What should have been 6 rounds of the drug turned to 15 but it worked!
On 24th September 2016, I was given the all clear!
I had to cope with many side effects of the chemo and the immunotherapy drugs but I was ALIVE!
This year, 2021, I shall celebrate 5 years of being in remission.
The amazing research that Prof and his entire team do has led to me to this point.
Since my treatments, the team have already changed how much chemo they give a patient before they can intercept with the immunotherapy and that means that these patients won’t experience the physical issues I had.
If, what has happened to me can benefit that research and how drugs are administered during the treatments, I will be a lifelong giver of information for the cause, a ‘lifelong guinea pig’ if you will.
It’s time to give back to that very team that helped me survive this disease.
To celebrate this 5 year landmark, I’m walking 500 miles to help raise money for the research.
I am now able to walk most days but at times, I relapse due to the side effects of the drugs. I’m sure I can readily walk 500 miles between now and 24th September and if I walk more, then all the better.
I’d like to walk with friends and family, in person or virtually. It doesn’t matter how far we walk, I would just appreciate the company.
Will you join me? Please message me and let me know and we’ll find a way of walking together, even in these restrictive times.
If you’re not able to join me then please donate to this small charity that is doing all it can to understand all womb cancers, common or rare and give mothers the chance to have children or be with their children.
Thanks for reading and I look forward to walking with you.
