Story

In January, our son, Caspar, was born by emergency delivery at Homerton hospital, suffering from severe meconium aspiration syndrome. He was extremely unwell, and his future looked uncertain.

After he was born, he was immediately passed to a neonatal team who worked hard to save his life, before being whisked away to the neonatal intensive care unit, where he was sedated and ventilated on 100% oxygen. He stayed in the NICU for 18 days before coming home to our boat on the River Lea, with a clean bill of health.

We cannot begin to express how thankful we are to Homerton NICU for everything they did for Caspar. We were repeatedly told how lucky he was for making such a quick and full recovery - though there’s no doubt in our minds that it was less to do with luck, and entirely down to the fact he was able to access such excellent, and immediate, care and expertise.

We want to say thank you to the wonderful doctors and nurses who saved Caspar's life, and to the unit that saves the lives of hundreds of babies every year. We are just so profoundly grateful.

We also want to say thank you for the kindness and tender care the NICU team showed us, as we grappled with being new, and totally overwhelmed, parents to a poorly baby. The support we received enabled us to remain hopeful and positive throughout a potentially traumatic period. We will always remember the NICU staff with enormous love and fondness.

So this September, to say thanks, we’re raising money for Homerton NICU, by walking the entire 50 mile length of the River Lea - the beautiful stretch of water our boat floats on, and that runs from Bedfordshire down through London (via Homerton!) to the Thames. A river we love so much we named our son after it - Caspar Lea Paulin!

Please consider donating generously, and passing on the event information to friends, colleagues and family who might be interested in helping :)

All money raised will go to Homerton NICU, helping them continue the amazing work they do everyday for poorly babies.

Thank you Homerton NICU! We love you NHS!
