What does The Cedar House

Support Group do?

The Cedar House Support Group
supports women and families suffering from prenatal and postnatal
depression.  Postnatal depression and anxiety affects approximately 1 in 5 new mothers, and 1 in 10 fathers experience paternal depression and anxiety after the birth of a baby. It is a very debilitating illness which can have a huge impact on the family when left unsupported and/or untreated.  It is the leading cause of maternal death in the first postnatal year due to suicide.

The Cedar House Charity was set up in 2004 and offers support to mothers by holding free group therapy sessions in South London and Surrey. The groups provide a safe, supported, and
confidential environment where mothers can get together with others who may be feeling similar to themselves and are facilitated by the charity's specialist postnatal depression counsellor, Liz Wise. Liz has thirty years’ experience in facilitating groups, providing counselling and has her own personal experience of the illness. The groups run by the charity aid recovery by normalising feelings and reducing the sense of isolation that postnatal depression can bring. The majority of mothers that attend say it has helped their recovery
more than any other support available to them.

The charity is extremely small and gets no funding from the NHS or local authorities and relies solely on private donations, grants and fundraising events.  We are sure that, with all of our support and fundraising, we can make a huge difference to the
charity and hopefully enable it to help more mothers and families.

About the charity

The Cedar House Support Group is a charity helping mothers experiencing postnatal depression. We provide a supportive environment for women to discuss their feelings. This aids recovery by normalising feelings and reducing the isolation that PND can bring. We operate in both Surrey and London.
