Story

UPDATE: We have successfully completed the Welsh 3000s (15 peaks) challenge in a first peak to last peak time of 20 hours and 30 minutes. We had a fantastic time training for the event and working as a team toward completing this brilliant challenge. We are still really grateful for any contributions to our sponsorship target and thank you all for your support and encouragement.

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Joe Abbott, Alastair Denniston, Matt Edmunds, Paul Tomlins and Geraint Williams are eye surgeons based in Birmingham.

On 8th June 2013 we aim to attempt the arduous "Welsh 3000s Challenge" in support of Sight for East Africa. This challenge involves reaching the peaks of each of the 3000 ft high mountains in Wales (all 15 of them!) within 24 hours without using any form of transport. It involves around 30 miles of walking and about 13,000 ft of ascent. More information can be found at http://www.welsh3000s.co.uk

Sight for East Africa (SEA) is a Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) charity set up in 2007 to improve eye care in East Africa. This is achieved through a Vision 2020 link between QEHB and Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC), a large teaching hospital in Moshi, Tanzania.

Around half of Tanzania's population of 37 million live in absolute poverty, and of these 350,000 are blind. More than 80% of the blindness is preventable or treatable but there is only one eye surgeon per million people. SEA brings Birmingham's leading eye specialists to Moshi to train the next generation of eye surgeons to provide eye care for Northern Tanzania. Although our specialists give their time freely we need to raise funds to help train staff and buy key pieces of equipment.

We hope you will think our cause worthwhile and sponsor us. Thank you for your support.
