Fundraising for people who suffer with dizziness and balance disorders may not sound like such a big deal compared to some of the life limiting conditions many people fundraise for such as the bid 'C' and heart conditions etc (all very valid and worthy), but I can tell from experience that having a dizziness and balance disorder can be the most dis-enabling and debilitating condition that anyone could have.
I have two family members in my life where they have had regular episodes of the most horrendous nausea, vomiting, sensations of spinning and where ever they are, they have to lay down, close their eyes and try and sleep the attack off. This can happen anywhere, any place, any time and often has little or no signal that is going to happen. For this reason, people who suffer with balance and dizziness disorders can be really vulnerable. The symptoms sometimes make the public to perceive them to be drunk or a bit weird and treated in the most appalling way possible, especially when an episode comes on in the middle of Waterloo Station at the peak of rush hour!
The disorder can impact on many areas of a sufferers life as well as their family, friends and work colleagues. It can affect employment, driving, travel, being in noisy environments and just coping on a day to day basis with everyday tasks that you and I wouldn't even think twice.about.
