Story

I spent a month at the Thuthuka project in Bulawayo, which is a project that attempts to address the needs of street children giving them a family, an opportunity to go to school and a home, if they are willing. The project - which operates a children's home - currently provides a home for 24 amazing kids. However it could do so much more if only it had a few more resources. A small amount could make a huge difference, which is why I have created this page... let me tell you more..

Scripture Union Bulawayo, which funds all activities at Thuthuka, is hampered by a lack of economic resources, which affects many aspects of this project. Currently there are 24 children living at Thuthuka, and Scripture union Bulawayo can only afford to buy $40 worth of vegetables for them over a monthly period. This is particularly unacceptable when you consider that there is over an acre of land on the Thuthuka premises, which has previously been used as farmland. However currently the water, management, and resources to irrigate this land properly, are not there.

Despite this hardship, following recent events at Thuthuka there is undoubtedly already cause for optimism. Thanks to Scripture Union a Borehole is forecast to be drilled at the Thuthuka children's home at the end of September. This will give its residents access to an unlimited supply of clean water. Furthermore from visiting similar organisations in Bulawayo I know that having access to clean water can lead to greater things, with a little extra financial help.

One such Organisation is called the King George the 6th school for the handicapped. Whilst in Bulawayo I visited KG6 and was blown away by what I encountered and the consequent potential I could now see in Thuthuka. At KG6 one gardener (a recent graduate from an agricultural school) had cultivated a piece of land smaller than that of Thuthuka's to yield enough crop to cover his own $200 a month salary, whilst supplementing the diet of the school children.

It is my vision that with your help, the same can be achieved at Thuthuka. The water can be properly utilized to attend to the children's immediate needs and the money I'm raising here can help fund the irrigation of farmland at Thuthuka, whilst also paying for the land to be cultivated by a graduate from an agricultural school.

The money raised will give Thuthuka the chance to employ them for an initial period of six months. In this time they will be able to make the land at Thuthuka yield enough crops to cover the graduate's monthly salary, whilst also meeting the children's vital dietary needs. Furthermore any surplus can be sold to help pay for the children's clothes, school fees which are $90 a term or for everyday things which the home badly needs but can often not afford.

Please invest in the future of these children.

Thank you.
