Story

William is a 11 year old boy with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy – a life limiting condition that involves rapidly worsening muscle weakness in all four limbs. William was diagnosed with this illness at the age of 8 and up until then he lead the life of a typical young boy enjoying his childhood, playing football and running around the school playground. Since his diagnosis Williams condition has deteriorated rapidly and he is now permanently in his wheelchair, completely immobile and unable to weight bear. William lives with his younger sister and his mother in a small council owned house in Hessle, presently their home is not adequately equipped to house William, his electric wheelchair and his ever increasing needs. Mum and William are in desperate need of help to facilitate a build of a small downstairs extension to incorporate a wet room and bedroom for him. This will enable him to keep what little dignity he has left and he will be able to mobilise himself into his own room, without the whole house being disrupted with his aids and equipment in the presence of others visiting.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is an illness that normally affects only boys and the future prognosis is not good for William, he will slowly, almost fully, lose the use of all of his limbs. William is a happy little boy who attends mainstream school and has a lot of friends, who are very supportive of him. However, as he becomes older he will be restricted in how he participates with others, due to his ever increasing personal care needs. This downstairs accommodation will enable him to have friends over to visit without the intrusion of having to have his personal care needs met in front of others.

The cost of this small extension for William is in excess of £32,000, William’s family are not in a position to find this kind of funding. The Local Authority have contributed a substantial amount to this building project, however there still remains a significant amount of money for the family to find. Williams mum obviously only wants the best for her child and that the most important think is to keep his dignity wherever possible.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
