Story

COVID-19 - has seriously affected fundraising for this project

National Lottery Heritage Fund has suspended applications for finance support  until October 2020 at the earliest leaving the financial goal of the Workington Stella Maris in doubt.
Local fundraising has taken a serious blow with the closure of our church and the cancellation of our fundraising events.

Our Parish priest have been amazing and ensured that daily masses are still available through live streaming and have made sure that even at times of great sorrow we can still have a mass for our loves ones which is said simultaneously with the grave side or crematorium services. They have adapted the live streaming so that masses can be recorded and a Friends of Christ the Good Shepherd Workington group has been set up on social media to help support parishioners who are struggling at this time.  ( https://mcnmedia.tv/camera/christ-the-good-shepherd)

This is living proof that Our Lady Star of the Sea and St Michael's is not only a beautiful historic building but in times of crisis is able to adapt using modern technology to reach out to people who are isolated and vulnerable and give them comfort and peace.

We are optimistic that we will be able to restart our local fundraising in the autumn but in the meantime we need to keep the funds coming in.

Many people like Captain Tom have been able to raise a huge amount of money for the NHS which is brilliant but in a much smaller way Our Lady Star of the Sea and St Michael's is doing her bit to support and comfort  the people who are affected by this COVID 19 pandemic.

Please consider giving just a small amount to this cause so that this lovely church can continue in generations to come to deliver that comfort and support.

Please mark all donations WSMP so that it can be diverted to the correct funds

RCN 234331
The RC Diocese of Lancaster seeks to be the evangelizing presence of the Catholic Church in Lancashire, north the River Ribble, and all of Cumbria. The Charity is governed by a Trust Deed dated 31 July 1934 (as subsequently amended by schemes of the Charity Commission) and is registered by the Charity Commission of England and Wales as charity number 234331. The Diocese of Lancaster was created by the Holy See in 1924; the northern area formerly having been within the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle and the southern area having been within the Archdiocese of Liverpool. The Diocese has 87 parishes with regular services are available in 108 churches and chapels and 82 schools throughout the whole of the county of Cumbria and those parts of Lancashire, north of the River Ribble and the west of the Pennines. These communities served by the charity are quite diverse, and include towns/cities in Cumbria such as Barrow, Workington, Carlisle and Whitehaven, the whole of the Lake District. In urban areas, parishes might be just a few square miles in size, whereas in the more rural parts of Cumbria parishes can be 200+ square miles. In Lancashire the coastal resorts of Blackpool and Morecambe fall within our boundaries, as does the city of Preston.
