Story

             RIP Bill Chester

For the XRT year April 2022 - April 2023 our chairman decided to support the local Guildford charity GUTS. To date we have raised money through a summer barbecue and a Christmas quiz. (The answers for the quiz can be found lower on this page).

The poignancy of this decision was brought home to us when, in the closing months of 2022, one of our own members, Bill Chester, was diagnosed with advanced Bowel Cancer and sadly passed away.

To lose Bill so quickly has been a great shock to us all in Guildford XRT. I can remember walking around the golf course with Bill in September with no inclination of what was to follow.

As a member of Guildford XRT Bill was always quick witted and ready to help with any of the events we planned. It is a hard lesson to us all and brings home the importance and relevance of organisations such as GUTS.

It is traditional for the Guildford Ex Round Table, (XRT) Club to run a Christmas Quiz on behalf of our chosen charity for the year. This year we are supporting local Guildford charity GUTS.

GUTS was founded in 1983 by Professor Chris Marks who saw that earlier diagnosis was key to improving bowel cancer survival rates. He set up the charity and after a lot of fundraising initiated one of the first bowel cancer mass screening programmes in the UK. In its first year it reached 20,000 patients from 37 GP practices in the Guildford area.

Since then GUTS funding has been pivotal both in research to advance screening and detection, and in improving the care, treatment and outcomes for patients – not just from the Guildford area but from right across the south of England.

2023 is the 40th year of operation for GUTS and they will be marking the year with some additional community fundraising activities, with the aim of raising enough money to establish a bowel cancer information hub. The purpose of this facility will be to provide advice and information for newly diagnosed patients, families and others who have questions about treatment or any other aspect of the disease. The money raised through the quiz will support this endeavour.

This year's quiz is now closed. Thanks for all the entries. The winner(s) will be notified by email.
