Celebration for Xtreme Everest 2 expedition
After almost three long months of climbing, clinical research, highs and lows came to an end for the Xtreme Everest 2 team 23/05/2013. This was followed by a celebration party in Kathmandu, Nepal, held six years to the day of the successful summit by the 2007 Caudwell Xtreme Everest expedition team.
The XE2 explored the well-known ability of Sherpas to tolerate hypoxia – reduced oxygen – at high altitude. 64 Sherpas and more than 100 lowlanders, mainly from the UK, were studied over two months. These included the Royal Free volunteers Peter, Pei San, Jennifer, Alistair, Breda and Aine who gave so much of themselves to help the research project. This involved intensive sea level testing before the trek and ongoing testing during and after. XE2 leader Dan Martin also endured a muscle biopsy prior, during and after.
Dan applauded the teamwork and dedication of more than 40 scientists who have been in the field for nearly three months. “This is a unique and extraordinary project. We could not have completed the field data collection without the exceptional performance of a large team spread across three field laboratories.”
The results of the Trek will be used to improve the care of intensive care patients who suffer from low oxygen levels.
