Story
The Warwick in Africa scheme was started; to not only help educate and support young learners, but to also train and send down volunteers and master teachers who will act as a positive, transformative role model to them whilst contributing in any feasible way to the development of the schools they are placed and in turn, the communities.
This year, I have competed to be a part of this fully funded opportunity where I will be teaching Maths in South Africa, Limpopo this summer.
If it is fully funded, why am I raising money?
The answer to that is simple, the money raised is not for my flights or accommodation or for me at all!
It is going towards helping to fund some more student volunteers and master teachers take part in this wonderful scheme next year!
Over 210,000 children have already benefited from this scheme
with a reported 44% increase in test scores over the years! With your help that number will only continue to increase year after year.
- 33 million primary school-aged children in Sub-Saharan Africa do not go to school. 18 million of these children are girls.
- Although literacy rates have greatly improved in Africa over the last few decades, approximately 40% of Africans over the age of 15, and 50% of women above the age of 25 are illiterate.
- Primary school enrolment in African countries is among the lowest in the world.
- In Sub-Saharan Africa, only two-thirds of children who start primary school reach the final grade.
- There is an average of 40 pupils per teacher in sub-Saharan Africa, but the situation varies considerably from country to country. In many countries, it is more than 60 to one.
Being from a developing African country, I understand fully well that although the statements above might not be the cases in some parts of the continent, they still undoubtedly describe the state of education in a significant number of some of the countries on the continent. It’s disheartening. Thankfully, we as WiA, are striving to change that!
