Story
In September 2018 I will be spending 4 days trekking 50km
through the Icelandic landscape with Iceland Traveller Ltd, we will be walking through rugged volcanic and lakeside landscapes with breath taking views. Our paths will vary from gravel tracks, rough lava terrain to mountain paths and grass tracks and I am sure there will be stream or two to walk through as well. We will walk from low land level close to sea level to about 600m. Our nights will be spent in a variety of accommodation styles from a tent to a hotel!
Why am I doing this for Alzheimer’s?
In May 2014 I lost someone very important in my life to Alzheimer’s.
I spent a number of years watching my amazing nan loose the knowledge of how to do simple things like how to make a cup of tea, how to use a knife and fork, who she was, who the people were around her, how to walk and eventually how to talk. It is the hardest thing I have ever had to experience, to watch a person who was always so capable and independent slowly dwindle into a lady who became someone different and eventually dependent on people for every aspect of her
life.
As a family member it is really hard to take in that there is not a lot you can do to help except be there, comfort them and listen to heir conversations which you have heard a million times before like it is the
first time you have heard it. Having experienced all of this I really want to
be able to help the Alzheimer’s society in any way I can. By taking part in this challenge I hope that I can raise as much as possible to assist Alzheimer’s society in research, care, support etc for anyone suffering or caring for anyone with Alzheimer’s.
Before she got ill Nan always paid a big interest in the things that we (the grandchildren) did and a trip to Iceland was one of the last big adventures that I had which we were able to chat about on my return.
She asked what we did and loved looking at photos and saying it would be too cold for her. It only seems right that I return to Iceland for this trek challenge in her memory.
