This June 9th I will be running the vitality 10k to raise money for Beat, the UK's eating disorder charity. As many people will know, I myself have been struggling with an eating disorder for the past several years and accessing help has been no easy ride; had I not become aware of the problem myself and sought out support and diagnosis I would have slipped under the radar- this I have no doubt about.
I am lucky but I am aware that so many people are not, not only that but I have watched this awful mental illness affect so many wonderful and beautiful people in my life that deserve so much better and watching their struggles in recovery was as hard for me as I imagine it has been for them to watch mw. This is the reason I chose to fundraise for Beat.
Beat supports anyone with an eating disorder, their friends and family, as well as professionals working with or worried about an individual in their care. These serious mental illnesses include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. 725,000 people in the UK have a diagnosed eating disorder. They affect people of all ages and backgrounds, and up to one in four sufferers are male. In an age where dangerous dieting cultures and increasingly unrealistic social standards are causing more and more strain to individuals striving to achieve the impossible, eating disorders are evolving into even more subtle and deadly forms and something needs to be done. Anything you can donate will be appreciated it, and if you can't donate then please please share! Thank you.
