"Saving one dog won't change the world, but it will surely change the world of that one dog."
Lee and I adopted the one and only Ninja from the Dog's Trust in Edinburgh one year ago. It was never our intention to adopt a staffie initially, but after some research and seeing the sheer number of these dogs in rescue shelters we knew we had to help one.
Ninja was a street dog, unchipped and unwanted. He was so friendly when we met him. Staffies are known as nanny dogs because of their willingness to please people. He was fear aggressive towards other dogs which meant the chances of him getting re-homed were slim. We took a punt and he has changed our whole world.
Since then it has become our mission to volunteer and educate on the plight of staffies and a legal bill called Breed Specific Legislation (BSL), which bans particular breeds in the UK (e.g. the pitbull). It is an abomination and people who raise dogs to be aggressive should be banned, not entire breeds.
Staffordshire Bull Terriers are currently on the watch list for BSL because of irresponsible owners. Staffies are the most likely dogs to be abused and dumped. Strays are picked up and put in a dog pound facility where the local Council hold stray dogs found in their area. The dog will be kept there for 7 days, after which the dog will become the responsibility of the kennel. Due to the sheer volume of staffies arriving in Local Authority ‘pounds’, compared to other breeds of dog the staffies are frequently the ones that never get rescued and are left in the pounds when the dreaded ‘put to sleep date/destroy’ arrives.
We would love to change opinion about this beautiful breed and help those who have suffered under human hands.
