Story
I normally run in Pink, but on the 2nd of March I’ll be joining Team MacMillan and running in Green in the Reading Half Marathon. I’m not a natural runner. More a plodder really. But last year we lost my younger brother Dom to cancer and I wanted to help fundraise for the amazing charity that helped support my brother and my family. Here’s my very personal story;
When Dom was admitted to hospital on 1st March last year, just a week before his 37th birthday, he had been suffering with shoulder pain. Dad called me that evening to tell me Dom’s shoulder was broken, not through an accident but by the cancer that had literally eaten through the bone. I couldn’t make sense of it.
His deterioration was fast. The hopes we had for treatment weren’t to be. He became too poorly for chemo and instead embarked on a cocktail of drugs to manage the increasing pain. He died on the 8th of April, barely six weeks since he was first diagnosed and exactly a month after his 37th birthday. His little boy, Ryan, was just 3 years old; he tells us his Daddy is with the stars in the sky.
The picture was taken just a month before he died. Me, Matt and Dom. Sister and Brothers. I was 37 weeks pregnant in the photo and baby Isaac arrived 4 days before Dom’s funeral. I was so grateful for my tiny bundle in white amid the black of his friends and our family at the funeral.
Dom, this one’s for you.
Thank you all for your support. X
