Story
Abi was born at 25 weeks gestation weighing 1lb 3oz or 550g, i.e. half a bag of sugar, in the RVH Belfast on the 15th March 2004.
Abi fought from the word go and with the help of the specialist staff in the RVH neo-natal unit she survivied the first precarious 72 hours and began to find her footing in this unfamiliar world. Having improved rapidly she was deemed strongest and most able to survive a trip back to Anrtim Area Neo-Natal unit.
However after her arrival she began to deteriorate. Due in part to her prematurity she was born with a "hole in her heart" and after much deliberating she was scheduled for the return trip to the RVH for a heart operation. Although we were expecting a return to the neo-natal unit she was older than 28 days old and was no longer deemed a neo-nate and now a child! - instead Abi returned to the RVH childrens intensive care unit and was prepared for heart surgery at the massive weight of 2lb 6oz!
After sucessfull heart surgery and transfere back to Anrtim Area Neo-Natal Unit she began to improve steadily until she was fit enough to go home. Abi remains very small and light for her age even though she could eat for Ireland!
