Funding playground equipment for the Anderson School
Our goal at the National Autistic Society is to help transform lives, change attitudes and
create a society that works for autistic people.
In September 2017, our charity opened its eighth specialist autism school, in Chigwell, Essex. The Anderson School and Enterprise Campus is an innovative, new kind of school. Not only do we provide appropriate support and education to autistic pupils, but we also support them with developing the skills and confidence they need to go on
to employment and related opportunities beyond school and reach their full
potential.
There is a clear need for specialist schools like the Anderson School. A recent NAS survey found
that:
63% of autistic children are in a school their parents don’t believe suits them;
34% of autistic children say the worst part about school is being picked on;
17% have been excluded from school, compared to 4% of non-autistic children;
Only 16% of autistic adults are in full time employment.
We aim to change this, and with your help we will.
While some playground equipment has already been installed at the Anderson School since it opened, the students have requested an assault course and there is also scope for some further equipment (one option is for two ‘bird’s nest’ swings). This would
significantly enhance the outdoor space and enrich the students’ school
environment, thus facilitating a greater overall learning experience. The
student council would love to be involved in the planning and selection of
equipment, which adds another layer to the benefit for the students. A donation
of £25k would fully fund both the assault course and some additional items,
including design, equipment, and installation.
