The Mongolia Charity Rally is a pan-continental drive across five mountain ranges, two deserts and enough barren and pot-holed roads, paths and terrain to ensure we'll swagger like John Wayne for a good few weeks after we complete the drive. We will start from Bournemouth (IE Rob's house after breakfast) on the 4th of June and our final destination is the great Mongol capital of Mongolia, beyond the Gobi desert, Ulaanbaatar, 3 week later. Thats if we make it. Bandits, police, wildlife, dodgy food and mafia all stand in our way.
We aim to donate our vehicle/tools at the end of the rally to GoHelp when we reach our destination. Our vehicle will then be auctioned off and proceeds are used towards Healthcare and Education for children in Mongolia.
We plan to cover countries such as Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan and Siberia (not a country but sounds good) with over 1200 miles off road over one of the most hardest terrains out there through Mongolia.
The vehicle: A beaten up 2007 Nissan Navara, most bad bodywork covered with stickers and probably now with questionable servicing. We will chuck some food and tools in the back, probably a couple of tents, and well, start driving towards the desert and just, well, hope for the best really...I kind of like the Navara and wouldn't have minded it for myself, however we get the pleasure of it seeing its final days.
The Team: Steve and Rob Barnes, actually brothers in real life. One cannot do mechanics to save his life, the other thinks he can but probably wouldn't be able to save his own life either. Especially without the internet.
The Sponsors: The following businesses donated very generously to our cause and we are eternally grateful. Draper (tools), Hankook (tyres), Nextbase (dash cam), Opie Oils (err oils), Adrian Flux (insurance), drivn.co.uk (clothing) and RB Autocare (vehicle checkup). There is still space on the vehicle for any more sponsors!
Our Contribution: Apart from the £4.5k vehicle, planning, time, purchase of equipment, buying wheels we didn't need, servicing, driving, fuel, food, hotels, flight home, time off and chasing sponsors, no, we contributed nothing ;)
The followup: We are hoping to make a free 'feature length' documentary of our travels including drone footage and eating dodgy food. Drone will probably crash and get ruined before the good part. This film will probably be the best film you have ever seen.
Please join us in our epic journey and donate generously in order to help us meet our mandatory £1000 target. They won't let us go otherwise.
