Cancer Focus Northern Ireland - we care for families affected by cancer with family support, counselling and other care services. We also do important cancer prevention work in schools, workplaces and communities, and fund ground-breaking research. All the money you donate stays in Northern Ireland.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Sadly the challenge is OFF for this year! Scan showed significant damage that will be 6 to 9 months in healing. Thank you to all that have given so far. God willing it will happen next year.

This past year a lot of people known to me and close to me have been diagnosed with cancer, had cancer scares and, sadly in one instance, died as a result of cancer.  Unfortunately most of us can relate to this.  Of the many worthy charities I have chosen Cancer Focus NI to benefit from all personal donations. Their website describes fully the work that they carry out through education, support and health checks so please visit it.

Less than four years ago I hadn't climbed anything other than the stairs and a 3.4m ladder!  An 'encounter' with Shanlieve in the Mournes changed all of that and I have been hooked ever since.  After many trips throughout the UK and Ireland I've climbed over 150 peaks including the highest in each country.  Naturally the next step has to be the Alps and what better mountain to tackle for my first alpine peak than the Matterhorn?!  As the YouTube link shows it's quite a challenge but, assisted by a qualified guide, one I feel capable of completing.  At this point it should be stressed that any attempt on a mountain at this altitude is extremely dependant on the weather.  Should the weather be against us other peaks will be considered albeit none with the difficulty or exposure of the Matterhorn.

Ulster Bank, North Down Motor Factors, and Killyleagh Box Company have all contributed significantly so far.  Other businesses will be helping out over the coming weeks and I'll update accordingly.  All of your donations go directly to Cancer Focus NI, not the cost of funding the trip.  I'll be funding that through other means.  I'll also be organising a quiz and having a car boot sale - watch this space for more details.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity. So it’s the most efficient way to donate – saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
