Second time lucky: Belgium to Croatia · 1 August 2014

Every two hours someone in the UK is paralysed by a spinal cord injury. It can happen to anyone at any time and no one is prepared for how it will change their life. Aspire is a national charity that provides practical help, supporting spinal cord injured people from injury to independence.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In August 2011, between my second and final year of university, I attempted to cycle from London to Croatia (having cycled from London to Geneva the previous summer). Whilst cycling through Belgium I fell off my bicycle and broke my back resulting in a spinal cord injury, leading to paralysis from waist down.

I underwent eight hours of surgery in Liège Hospital and stayed in Belgium for a week. I was then transferred to Stoke Mandeville for rehabilitation where I stayed for a further three and a half months.

Our journey will start in Liege, before cycling to the campsite where I had my accident. From there we will cycle south, eventually passing over the Alps and Dolomites. Our final destination will be Croatia, which was our intended destination before my accident in August 2011.

I will be cycling with several friends, some who were there when I broke my back, and others who were not. We will be camping along the way and the ride will be as similar as possible to how  it was nearly three years ago. The ride will be routhly 1150 miles and will take place from the first of August until the 22nd of August, exactly three years post injury.

I have been organising the trip myself and i will be paying for the support vehicle / petrol / supplies myself. Any donations for Aspire, however big or small are hugely appreciated.

Thank you!

I will be updating our progress along the way using twitter and facebook:
