Later this year, I am heading to Nairobi (Kenya) to join, my friend, Ricky Munday. With my sporting background, I plan to deliver sporting equipment to the Thomas Barnardo’s House Orphanage in Nairobi, where Ricky will have been working for 4 months prior to my arrival. It is currently home to 180 orphaned, abandoned and destitute children whose age ranges from birth to early twenties. The children are housed in 9 family units, each with a resident 'Mother. Most of the children attend the 'Jonathan Gloag Academy' situated nearby. Both the orphanage and the school are supported by The Balcraig Foundation and directed by Ann Gloag (a co-founder of Stagecoach plc). The Home is entirely reliant on donations and has a growing commercial department, which runs a number of projects to generate income to support the home and reduce dependency.
I feel that sport is a medium which will always bring people together no matter what race, religion, creed or colour. Providing decent sporting equipment will let the children take part in various activities which they otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to experience.
It's an amazing opportunity to make a difference to the lives of the children in the orphanage. In October, Ricky and I are planning to climb the 3 highest peaks in Africa; Mt Stanley in Uganda (3rd highest), Mt Kenya (2nd highest)and Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Hopefully I will raise much-needed funds for the home and inspire the children in the process.
Please support me and donate to this very worthy cause.
Many thanks,
Ally.
