We at SOBS offer support to those impacted by suicide loss

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

We are collectively raising money for the SOBS charity which supports family and friends who have been bereaved due to suicide.

On 12 April 2018 we suddenly lost our beloved Áine to suicide at the age of 30. This is something that came as a shock to us all and is not something anyone could ever be prepared for. An inspiration to everyone that she met, Áine was incredibly witty - always being the first to crack a joke - and was fiercely passionate about making the world a better place. She was the life and soul of any party, and her loss is felt by us all everyday.

SOBS (Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide) is a charity establishing a support network for those who have been affected by suicide. It is a life-changing event for those affected, and the stigma around suicide means it is difficult to talk about and come to terms with. SOBS offers the resources for survivors to meet regularly and support each other through sharing their personal experiences. They have volunteers all across the UK from all walks of life, the majority of whom have been affected by suicide themselves, so it’s an invaluable resource for struggling friends and families.

SOBS has helped us as a family enormously in the wake of our loss. By speaking to others who have experienced the same tragedy, the support network eliminates the isolation felt by the bereaved and provides them with hope for the future. By connecting survivors, all members can find genuine support in the sharing of real life experiences; a personal aspect that is difficult to find anywhere else.

Sadly the need for the service provided by SOBS is growing, so we want to raise money to ensure that all families can receive the same support. We want to contribute to raising awareness for the wider discussion around mental health and eliminate the stigma surrounding suicide.

As a group we are doing this through a month of running/cycling beginning on 12 April 2021 and ending on 12 May 2021, the date of Áine ’s 34th birthday. We want to commemorate Aine through a demonstration of her everlasting impact upon us all.

Andrea, Roisin,Harrison, Jane and Elisha will each be running a total of 100km in this period, and Niall will be doing a virtual cycling trip from Manchester to Edinburgh and back, her 2 favourite cities, roughly equal to 700km in total. Benjamin (14) and Isabelle (12) will be completing as much as this challenge as possible
