Flora London Marathon 2008 · 13 April 2008 ·

Age UK is the new force combining Age Concern and Help the Aged We believe that age needs respect. It needs kindness. Sometimes it needs help. Too many people experience difficulties as they age. We cannot promise everyone good health, but we will fight for good care for all of us. Where we find loneliness, we will reach out. When age becomes a burden, we will try to lighten the load. Age UK will campaign. We will fundraise. We will research. We will make the powers that be listen. We will do all this to make life better for older people here and abroad. Age UK is for all of us, because age is a part of life.

Story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page.

With the marathon now over, I thought I would just add a note to my original message!

Firstly, thank you so much to those of you who have supported me - really appreciated - my friends, family and Mornington Chasers (my running club) and people I haven't even met who have given so generously!

Secondly, I ran in a time of 3:37:15 - not quite a personal best, but I'm really thrilled. It was the most extraordinary day and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. I feel so privileged to have been part of such an amazing event - where else could you run alongside Massai Warriors and human size bottles of orange juice! A unique event indeed!!!

My original message follows:

I know I said Boston was my last marathon but London is my home town and at least this time friends and family can come to watch and cheer me on! It's also a great charity event and although I gained a place in the 'Good for Age' category I've decided to raise money for Age Concern. Please take a few moments to read more about Age Concern's work so you can see why I chose to run for them.

Of course I would like to improve on 3:35 and, with London marathon being relatively flat and the added incentive of running for others, would love to think I can. I take my training very seriously as I know it's the only way to run a good marathon - so come rain or shine, snow or fog I'll be out there pounding the pavements and hills of North London and as the mileage increases across to the South side of the Thames and through all the fabulous central London parks.

It's only 2.5 years ago since my 50th birthday and those famous words, 'I'd like to run a marathon before I get too old' and here I am training for the fourth. We really are never to old to have dreams and keep fighting for them! I am very lucky to have good health and fitness and running this marathon for Age Concern is one of the best ways I can use them.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Age Concern England will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor me now!

Many thanks for your support.
