Story
Welcome to my JustGiving page.
In April 2011 I am running the Virgin London Marathon to raise money for Anthony Nolan, a charity that saves lives. They run a hugely successful stem cell register and match donors to leukaemia sufferers. Often this is their last hope.
After chemo and radiotherapy leukaemia sufferers' immune systems are left drastically weakened. But a stem cell transplant can replenish healthy cells and protect them.
These donations need to be ready as soon as treatment has finished, and with only a 30% likelihood of a match from within the family hospitals regularly look to Anthony Nolan for help. With more than 400 000 people on their register it is still difficult to find a match: people are matched by tissue type, (not blood group) of which there are millions of different types. The body will reject a transplant that is not of the same cell tissue type. And so, with more people on the register, more matches can be found and more lives can be saved.
The money raised on this page will go towards recruitment events so that more people can join the register and will fund research into improving the outcome of bone marrow transplantation.
What could your donation buy?
£10 is the average cost of a saliva sample kit. Saliva samples tell us whether a potential donor is a match.
£20 could help towards the cost of storing a potentially lifesaving cord blood sample.
£50 could help towards the cost of recruiting a new potential donor to our register and testing their tissue to find out if they are a match.
