Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my fundraising page.

I’m glad to say I don’t often pester friends for good causes…The last time I asked for sponsorship was when I was still working as a reporter at TVS in 1982 when I rather foolishly volunteered to run the Maidstone Marathon, and even the great Franz Klammer donated £50 (a tidy sum back then!).

Skiing has been my life for a long time now. A former TV and Fleet Street reporter, I spent 15 years as the Financial Times ski correspondent. In 1994, I skied 365 consecutive days during the FT’s “Round The World Ski Expedition”, visiting 240 resorts in 13 countries, and entering the Guinness Book of records.  I went on to edit Ski+board magazine for 13 years and in 2011 I completed a 33-year mission to ski in all 38 US states with ski lifts. I have now skied in 729 resorts, including 30 heliskiing locations worldwide.

With my TV producer daughter Sam and her partner Nick I am now taking on the Alpine Challenge, a charity event challenging our team to clock up 150km+ of GPS-tracked skiing over two non-stop days across the 15 resorts of the massive Portes du Soleil ski area, navigating to as many checkpoints as possible across each of the 15 ski resorts. The team that successfully visits the most checkpoints and clocks up the most kms will win the Challenge 2017!  It’s all about strategy, stamina, teamwork and good fun!

But more than that, I am also raising funds for youth charity Snow-Camp. Snow-Camp is an innovative charity that uses a unique combination of skiing, snowboarding and life-skills programmes to support inner-city young people. Through the combination of snowsports and life-skills, their programmes enable young people to grow in confidence and with self-esteem, develop as individuals and make positive choices in their lives.

Your donation however small can help in so many ways:

  • £5 buys life-skills learning materials for a young person on our First Tracks programme
  • £10 pays for the Snowlife award, a certificate, badge and medal presented to a young person completing our First Tracks programme
  • £50 pays for a young person's first expereince of snowsports on day 1 of First Tracks
  • £100 pays for 2 days ski and snowboard tuition for 5 young people
  • £500 pays for training towards a Snowsport England Instructor qualification on our Excel programme

Thank you very much for your support to this fantastic cause. No matter how small your donation, it means so much to me and, of course, to Snow-Camp. Every single penny donated is very much appreciated, so please dig deep and support my efforts in supporting this great charity!
