 The Autistic Society Greater Manchester Area (ASGMA) provides a range of services to parents and carers of children and adults with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder.  This includes the provision of parents and carers support groups, a telephone support network, an E-mail support network, an information and signposting service – including the provision of a Parent Resource Pack, speaker meetings, awareness events and a regular newsletter.

 We also have our Aspirations Project which provides support and a wide range of social, leisure and cultural engagement opportunities for people across Greater Manchester with Asperger Syndrome / Higher Functioning Autism aged 10+. 

 People with Asperger Syndrome / Higher Functioning Autism often miss out on support as they don’t fit the ‘perfect box’.  Their Autism means they have an impairment of social communication, social interaction and imaginative thinking and yet they are of normal to high level intelligence.  They find it difficult to read the signals and body language that they are given by other people. They do not easily understand information that is communicated through gesture, facial expression or tone of voice and they tend to take everything that is said literally. Group activities often make social demands that most find impossible to meet and so are a considerable source of stress.

 Their Autism causes a great many of our service users to suffer from Mental Health problems as they struggle to cope with life and make sense of our social world.  Acute anxiety, depression, and extreme stress are amongst the problems they suffer, and they are also often extremely socially isolated – without direct support.

 ASGMA and Aspirations provides that support but it is only with the support of people like yourself we can continue to do so.  Help us to create a better life for people affected by Autism and Asperger Syndrome.
