Back Up services include mentoring, wheelchair skills training and activity courses as well as support in getting back to work or school after an injury. We provide peer led tailored support to help people adjust to a spinal cord injury and inspire independence and confidence for a positive future.

Story

Whatever you can afford will help transform a child’s life and give them a more positive future.

My name is Yvonne and I’m part of the Back Up Team. I’d like to tell you how your support could help a family just like mine.

Three years ago, at the age of 17 my son Max broke his neck while playing rugby, resulting in a spinal cord injury.

The severity of the accident left him in a critical condition and my immediate thought was that he wasn’t going to survive.

Gradually, Max’s health began to improve and after 8 months he came home from hospital. As a family we all decided that the best way for Max to begin adjusting to life was returning to school and finishing his A-Levels.

Challenges began when the authorities said that it would be easier if Max changed to a school nearer to home. Max didn’t want to do this. He had already gone through a massive trauma and was still coming to terms with his injury.

His teachers, though welcoming, were anxious about having a disabled student in the class as it was something that was completely new to them. Back Up helped make his transition back to school as pain-free as possible.

Back Up ‘bridged the gap’ by talking to his teachers and helping them prepare for Max’s return. They also liaised with an occupational therapist so that lessons were adapted and classes were moved to the ground floor.

Max achieved two A’s and a B in his A Levels and is now studying at university. I know from experience that Back Up is absolutely essential for children and young people who have sustained a spinal cord injury. It makes them realise that they shouldn’t be treated any differently from others.

Back Up desperately needs your support to help even more children and their families after a devastating injury. I know this time of year can be a financial strain, but please do consider making a donation.

How your support will help

£15 gives teachers the knowledge and confidence to make sure a child with a spinal cord injury is fully included back into school life with our inclusive Education Tool Kit.

£25 will allow a Schools Advocate to support teachers and pupils with practical advice while also giving children with a spinal cord injury a positive and understanding role model.

£50 helps train a mentor to support a parent who has been devastated by the spinal cord injury of their child. Their help makes coming to terms with the situation more manageable.
