Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

On 22 August 2015 Frank and Nim will take on the Newcastle to London 300 mile cycle challenge in aid of the June Hancock Mesothelioma Research Fund.

Working in the building industry, we are painfully aware that mesothelioma caused by exposure to asbestos has claimed thousands of lives, with new cases and more families devastated every year. We lost Derek Bastow, our company's founder and Frank's father, to the disease in 2012- so our fight is personal.

The June Hancock Fund was established in 1997 in memory of June, who sadly lost her fight against this disease but who led the way in gaining justice for sufferers. The Fund raises money for quality research into the diagnosis and treatment of mesothelioma and the care of people with the disease.

Mesothelioma is a terminal disease. Sufferers need support that goes beyond palliative care- they need to be seen as people, not just patients. The June Hancock Fund organise regular social events for mesothelioma patients where they can access counselling, support and expert advice outside of the hospital environment and most importantly, meet others and share experiences. These events cost the Fund £2,000 per year, so we'd love to raise that and ensure people continue to benefit.

About the charity

The Fund was created in 1997 to raise awareness of mesothelioma, fund research, and to support patients and carers. We have raised more than £1 million, mostly in small donations from those personally affected, for research, a helpline and educational/information events across the country.
