On Thursday 12th September 2013 Carolyn McAlpine and Dougie Moore will set off from the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre in Glasgow with the aim of running the 100 miles home to Tarbert in Argyll over three days to raise funds for Friends of the Beatson.

My dad was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2007 and sadly passed away in 2010. During his illness he was treated at the Beatson and as a family we were so grateful for the excellent care and treatment he received there, it really is a centre of excellence and the staff and facilities are outstanding.

The only issue we ever had with the centre was the two and half hour journey to and from Glasgow for appointments, treatment and visiting.

Six months after my dad passed away, his sister (my aunty Cate) was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and once again we found ourselves back at the Beatson and back to travelling the 100 miles to and from Glasgow for treatment, appointments and visits. Once again the care she received was first class and she made full use of the fantastic facilities provided by Friends of the Beatson.

It was on my way out from visting aunty Cate one day it occured to me that we should do something to raise money for the Beatson since its been such a big part of our lives over the last five years. I came up with the idea that I would do the 100 mile journey home on foot one last time to raise money for Friends of the Beatson and I started looking into it.

Dougie is an experienced runner and over the last few years has raised thousands of pounds for cancer charities. He was looking for a challenge to do for his 40th birthday and as soon as he heard about it he contacted me and was keen to get involved. The cause was close to his heart and I was delighted to have a partner in crime to take on the challenge.

So together we have organised the event and we will be kicking off our delayed three day challenge from the front door of the Beatson in September and will hopefully be joined by some of our family and friends at various points along the way.

Sadly aunty Cate passed away last year. She knew about the challenge and was supportive of the idea behind it although she, like most people we told about it, thought we were completely off our heads even attempting it.

Whether they live or die, every single person who steps foot in the Beatson is fighting the fight of their life. The point of this run is to make sure the Friends of the Beatson can continue to provide other families with the facilities that make life that little bit easier for them while they continue with their battle.
