Story

We are so excited for you to join us to celebrate our wedding!

We are very fortunate and already have our home set up together (including possessing an ungodly amount of kitchen equipment), so would like to use our wedding as an opportunity to spread some good in the world. Your attendance to celebrate with us is more than generous enough. However, if  you would like to give, then we would be so honoured if you would donate in our name to support the following two charities:

Arian Teleheal (www.arianteleheal.com)*

Arian Teleheal is a pioneering telemedicine charity founded by Dr Waheed Arian, which provides world-class healthcare advice to doctors in war zones and low-resource countries around the world. As a child, Dr Arian experienced life in a refugee camp, as a result of fleeing the war in Afghanistan. Whilst in the camp he contracted potentially fatal illnesses, as well as witnessing the effects of war and desperate need for medical care. It was this experience which inspired Waheed to want to become a doctor, in order to help others.

After overcoming immense challenges to achieve this dream, Dr Arian now works as a highly accomplished doctor in the UK. He also works additional shifts in order to fund using his annual leave to work voluntarily as a doctor in war zones in Afghanistan. He realised that many UK medics would like to help too, but could not travel safely to Afghanistan. This inspired him to establish Arian Teleheal, a charity which now has 100 volunteer medics who advise their colleagues in Afghanistan and other countries using social media or other every-day technologies. The scheme will soon be being extended to other countries in conflict.

We recently had the honour of meeting Dr Arian and hearing him speak about this amazing work. We were truly humbled and astounded by the story behind the charity and its work. Please do take the time to visit their site and read about the charity, as it is just incredible.

Your donation will help build this fantastic scheme, in order to save lives.

The Fragile X Society (www.fragilex.org.uk)

For the past 4 and a half years I (Becky) have had the honour of being the CEO of this wonderful charity. This means I have the pleasure of working with an amazing community every day, and seeing first hand the enormous benefit of its work.

Fragile X is a family of genetic conditions which may affect multiple members of families in different ways, including: learning disability; degenerative movement, memory and balance problems; premature menopause or infertility; as well as other mental and physical health challenges. As well as managing the effects of their condition, people with Fragile X and their families face substantial barriers to accessing the right diagnosis and support due to a lack of awareness and understanding of their condition. However, the Fragile X Society works to change that. We run a national helpline service which is the only specialised service in the UK to support and empower those with Fragile X, through providing information and practical guidance. We also facilitate the growth of a community, so that nobody with the condition feels alone. Finally, we tackle a lack of understanding through working with professionals and supporting research into the condition.

Your donation will help to further this vital work for people with Fragile X.

*Note: funds from this page are being collected via the Fragile X Society then being divided 50/50 with Arian Teleheal.
