50 squats a day for Ben the blind puppy's cataract surgery · 1 June 2022

Warrington Animal Welfare is a rehoming & neutering charity which strives tirelessly to reduce the amount of abandoned or stray animals in Warrington and the surrounding areas. We promote responsible pet ownership, neutering and microchipping for pets, and by rehoming animals at our rescue centre.

Story

Ben came to Warrington Animal Welfare as part of a litter of eight puppies who were surrendered as their breeders could not care for them. They all suffered from parvovirus as young pups and unfortunately some of Ben's brothers and sisters did not make it. Ben survived, but soon after, developed diabetes as a complication of parvovirus destroying his pancreas and his body's ability to produce insulin. Although Ben is receiving treatment for diabetes, he has developed cataracts which are making the lenses in his eyes cloudier day by day. He is now already completely blind and is finding it difficult to navigate his walks. It is so sad to see in such a young dog.

Poor Ben has already been through so much. He is only five months old and has his whole life ahead of him. He has had a full cataract assessment with an ophthalmology specialist and has been given the go-ahead for surgery, but we need to fundraise at least £5000 for him. The specialist vets have been wonderful and given us a generous discount, but it is still a lot of money we need to raise.

Centre Manager Jackie, Trustee Lorraine and I (Heidie, WAW on-site Vet) are doing 50 squats a day for the month of June to raise awareness and funds for Ben's condition, and hope to achieve our target of £5000 which will cover most of the cost of Ben's surgery. Once he receives the surgery, his sight will be restored, and he can go back to being the life-loving, energetic, cheeky boy he is.

Any amount you can donate, however small, is greatly appreciated! We can't wait to get Ben's sight back again!
